A brief description and history of the academy
Burnley Road dates from 1879 and has served the village of Mytholmroyd and the local community up to the present day. Our academy achieved its status on 1st September 2011 and retains a strong family feel, which is prized by the children, parents and staff. The building has extensions created in the 1950’s, 1960’s and more recently a new Foundation Stage Unit in 2005. Over the last 10 years the Headteacher and Governors have worked hard to fully refurbish and maintain the building and there is access for disabled adults and children.
Burnley Road Academy is a community primary catering for children in the 3 -11 age range. The academy is a member of the local cluster and has excellent working relationships with other academies and schools and good links with the community as a whole. We have a strong Community Cohesion Policy and this is expanding as it is a focus in our Academy Development Plan.
The academy is set in a rural environment, which has been enhanced substantially over the last few years to provide a variety of interest for teaching, learning and leisure. The playgrounds have seating, climbing walls, an activity trail and sheltered quiet areas. The fields are used for sports, games also at playtimes and lunchtimes in the spring and summer months. Adjacent to the field is a well developed nature trail which is stimulating for learning in the outdoors - we use this for Forest Activities.
We are very well resourced in all areas of the curriculum. The academy has very good ICT facilities with a Computer Suite, Ipads, Chromebooks and Interactive Whiteboards in every classroom. We work closely with our local secondary school, Calder High School benefiting from being involved in the Sports Co-ordinator Programme. We also employ an Extended School Co-ordinator, this has allowed the children to participate in a wide range of activities and this will develop further as we move forward. In 2010, we were one of the first schools in Calderdale to achieve the Gold Quality Mark Standard for outstanding extended provision.

The Governing Body is made up of experienced and new members. It is knowledgeable, active and supportive. We have an active Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA) who organise a wide number of events. Some are specifically aimed at the children while others are family orientated. Events include a regular Friday cake stall, BBQ’s, Easter Egg Competitions, Sponsored Runs and an annual Christmas Fair.
We have an active School Council and are proud that our children have a voice in our academy, trying to involve them in as many decisions as possible. At the centre of all that is done in our academy is the quality of teaching and learning. We aim to realise the full potential of each individual and prepare all pupils to live confident, independent lives. We want every child to be happy, achieve success and feel secure within a creative, caring, supportive environment.
