At Burnley Road Academy We Value

Courage, Compassion, Perseverance and Teamwork

A brief description & history of the academy.

Burnley Road Academy has been part of the Mytholmroyd community since 1879, welcoming generations of children and their families. We joined the Pennine Alliance Learning Trust in January 2025 and continue to be known for our strong family feel, something that pupils, parents and staff value. Over time, the school building has grown with the community, with extensions added in the 1950s and 1960s, a new Foundation Stage Unit built in 2005 and an extra classroom added in 2016.

The academy, like the wider village, was affected by flooding in 2012, 2015 and 2020. After the more recent floods, the school was fully refurbished and equipped with new resources. These experiences were challenging, but they brought our community closer together and helped strengthen our resilience.

Burnley Road Academy is a welcoming community primary school for children aged four to eleven. We work closely with other local schools and enjoy strong relationships with the village and the wider area.

Our rural setting offers a rich environment for learning and play. In recent years, we have continued to develop our outdoor spaces so that children can enjoy a range of activities, including seating areas, an activity trail and sheltered quiet spaces.

We are supported by a dedicated Governing Body and an active Parents, Teachers and Friends Association. Together, they help create a lively school community with events such as sweet stalls, barbecues, Easter competitions and our annual Christmas Fair.

We are proud of our School Council, which gives pupils a real voice in school life. We involve children in decisions wherever possible because their ideas and perspectives are important. At the heart of our work is our commitment to providing high quality teaching and learning. We want every child to feel happy, confident and well supported, and to leave our school ready for the next stage of their education.

Our most recent Ofsted inspection in April 2022 judged us to be a good school and praised our kind, considerate pupils and their excellent behaviour.
